Explore Shawnee Forest Country!

Few places offer such a powerful story of sacrifice and history as the Mound City National Cemetery. Situated on fourteen acres at the junction of two historic roads in southernmost Illinois, the cemetery offers a direct link to the region’s Civil War heritage. Of the more than 8,000 buried here, greater than half – including more than 2700 unknowns – served during the Civil War.

The Mound City National Cemetery Memorial Day ceremony is among the oldest in the region and dates to the years right after the Civil War. It is held on the Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend – everyone is welcome.
