Explore Shawnee Forest Country!

A wilderness adventure, not a walk in the park.

Burden Falls Wilderness is located near Bay Creek Wilderness and Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area. It is comprised of a central hardwood ecosytem with some pine plantations. Trails for hiking and equestrian use will take you by some indications of past use by people including homestead, fruit trees, cemeteries and abandoned roads. Of course, the small, but very scenic waterfall located on the southern edge of the wilderness gives the area its name.

This is a hidden gem you can reach on forest roads, drive slow and with caution. Falls are at the head of the trail with approximately 1 mile loop which leads down around the bluffs over bedrock trails to the base of the falls. This adventurous trail leading down to the falls can involve scrambling over rocks and a ledge crawl over the top of the falls.

ALWAYS stay away from wet/slick rocks, wear shoes with good traction and give yourself a few feet from the edge to ensure your safety.

Burden Falls Wilderness is usually accessible year round, but the falls flow when there has been wet weather. All seasons bring different scenic views.

This is a wilderness area - a natural environment - use caution.
